Rotary Draw Bending isn’t for Everyone
Ercolina Angle Rolls to the Rescue
What happens when your bending application requires a larger radius or bending angles greater than 180 degrees? Maybe the job requires producing coils or spirals or bending extrusions. Good news! There is a solution. Introducing the Ercolina angle roll, capable of bending a wide range of profiles and materials to centerline radius as small as six times diameter of the work piece and available in several models with capacity for every shop.
Fabricators are often overwhelmed when considering how to bend large radius or special profiles. To add to the confusion the angle rolls are often referred to pyramid rolls, sections rolls and include terms such as initial pinch, double pinch, and twist correction. Ercolina can help guide you through the process and select a machine that works for your application. One good rule of thumb: angle rolls should be considered for applications requiring radius greater than six times the material diameter, or bend angles greater than 180 degrees.
The above video showcases the versatility of a ring roll bending two inch square material with modular tooling that supports the entire profile to produce a part with less deformation to the desired radius. The universal tooling set provided with each machine can be positioned to capture and roll a variety of profiles including rectangular tube, solids, and angle iron.
One of the best features of Ercolina angle rolls is the ability to create and control the bending radius required for your job. Imagine you need to span a door opening or create a gated fence arch to dimension. All models come with a method of monitoring the center roll position enabling the operator to make multiple parts as necessary. Multiple passes can be taken to achieve the desired radius and improve the look of the material after the bend.
With a little time and patience you’re in control and able to create whatever you can imagine. Once you discover how very capable and versatile angle rolls can be these machines will become one of the most used in the shop. Oftentimes profiles can be rolled into a complete circle and then sawed to the desired length allowing one part to create several from the same bend. Now that’s increasing production the easy way. As a bonus, angle rolls can handle a variety of materials from mild steel to aluminum and stainless. Ercolina customer service representatives can help to select the correct tooling or even quote tooling to conform to special profiles. Longer sections of material can be fed from the right or left side of machine and Ercolina models are designed to operate in the vertical or horizontal position to meet your shop’s requirements.

Did You Know…
…there is a difference between pipe and tube?
You have probably heard the terms pipe and tube used interchangeably, and there’s a good chance you aren’t exactly sure what the difference is between them. Most people, even experts working in related industries, don’t actually know.
Tubing size is specified by OD (outside diameter) and the wall thickness (WT); the measured OD and stated OD are generally within very close tolerances of each other. Tubing is usually more expensive than pipe due to tighter manufacturing tolerances.
Pipes are categorized as tubular vessels used in pipeline and piping systems, and commonly transport gases or fluids. They are specified by “Nominal Pipe Size” (NPS) and Schedule (wall thickness). NPS was originally defined to be approximately equal to the ID measurement of that pipe. In reality, regardless of the wall thickness the nominal OD of a pipe will not change.
